TRAINER PROFILES

Tony Vasil - Trainer

Tony Vasil was raised by his mother Brenda in the shadows of the Caulfield racetrack. Tony's father John was killed in a hurdle race fall at the old Bacchus Marsh racetrack in 1959, a few months before Tony was born.

The young Tony Vasil had the family passion for racing. He was rarely far from the racetrack, either sneaking under the fence to watch the races , or selling the Herald outside the track after the last race for pocket (punting) money.

Tony got his first job with legendary trainer Angus Armanasco at Caulfield at age 13, before becoming an apprentice jockey to Doug Rebecca at the age of 15.

He rode 200 winners for more than 3500 rides before weight forced him out of the saddle. Tony says he decided to teach himself to train watching others at the Caulfield training centre. He took up a licence in 1991.

Tony believes employing the semi-retired legendary trainer Bob Hotsted as an assistant in 1995 and 1996 was a turning point in his career. "Bob had a tremendous knowledge of racing and training and he taught me a lot in that time" Tony said.

Tony Vasil began his training while continuing to ride trackwork and he has retained the habit. In 2000 Marstic gave him his first Group 1 when he won the Goodwood Handicap at Morphetville but it was the accquisition of a Danehill - Circles of Gold colt from breeder frank tagg in 2002 that changed Tony's life.

That colt turned out to be Elvstroem who after a lowly maiden win at Swan Hill as a late 2YO went on to win the 2003 AAMI Victorian Derby, the 2004 Caulfield Cup and took Tony overseas for a 2005 campaign that resulted in an historic win in the Group 1 Dubai Duty Freeat Nad Al Sheba.

Tony made light of his success with Elvstroem claiming to the media after the Caulfield Cup win - "I'm just a mug with a good horse"

It was during his time with Elvstroem in 2003 that Tony accepted an offer to join Aquanita Racing as a training partner. The move freed up his administration and allowed him to concentrate more on his horses at his Caulfield base.

Tony trains from a 24 box complex at Caulfield. In 2007 Tony trained Haradasun to win the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at randwick and the Group 1 George Ryder stakes (1500m) at rosehill.

Haradasun was sold to Coolmore Stud and transferred to Aidan O'Brien in Ireland. He won the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
